Toyota is recalling some 645,000 vehicles worldwide because of an electrical problem that may stop the air bags from deploying in a crash situation.
RELATED: The real reason your auto insurance is going up
The exact cause of the recall has been identified as an open circuit in the air bag sensors. The open circuit could cause the air bag warning light to illuminate. If that happens, the side and curtain shield air bags and/or front air bags may not deploy in a crash.
Some 49,000 of the vehicles affected by the recall are sold in the North American market:
The Associated Press reports the remainder of the vehicles in this recall are sold abroad in international markets. These include the Toyota Alphard, Vellfire, Sienta, Noah, Voxy, Esquire, Probox, Succeed, Levin and Hilux models — all produced from May 2015 to March 2016.
Owners of affected vehicles will receive notification in the mail beginning in late March 2018, according to a Reuters report.
At that point, you’ll be prompted to bring your vehicle into your local Toyota dealership for a free fix. The dealer will check the serial number of the sensors and replace them with new sensors, if necessary.
If you’re looking for a ray of sunshine in this news, consider this: So far, there have been no injuries or deaths reported stemming from this issue.
And it’s actually an air bag-related recall that is not connected to the ongoing Takata faulty air bag debacle responsible for more than 200 deaths and injuries worldwide!
