We’ve been hearing for some time now about how car sales are through the roof this year, but there’s one type of car that America has fallen out of love with: the family sedan.

The industry publication Automotive News reported that midsize car sales fell 27% in August.

Is the family sedan a dying breed?

According to data from Automotive News, sedan sales for the Nissan Altima, Ford Fusion, Hyundai Sonata and Kia Optima all dropped more than 30% in August.

And sales of the Chrysler 200, which made this list of 10 cars you’ll most regret buying, fell by two thirds.

Last December, a top sales executive with Toyota predicted that the RAV4, a compact SUV, would outsell the Camry within five years. According to Automotive News, that happened in August for the first time ever.

What does all this mean? Well, it seems pretty obvious that the crossover SUV is replacing the family sedan in many garages nationwide, partly due to steadily low gas prices.

But as Clark mentioned on the radio show, you could get a great deal if you still want a sedan!

Get a great deal on the top 5 ‘leftover’ cars

Credit.com recently highlighted the five “leftover” vehicles of 2016, models that are being phased out or redesigned, and are selling for way less than MSRP. It’s probably no surprise that most of these vehicles are sedans:

  1. 2016 Mercedes-Benz E-Class Sedan
  2. 2016 Hyundai Genesis Sedan
  3. 2016 Buick LaCrosse
  4. 2016 Cadillac SRX
  5. 2016 Subaru Impreza Sedan

Bottom line: While SUVs are getting all of the attention right now, if you’re willing to consider a family sedan, there are plenty of higher-than-average incentives to take advantage of.
