First SUV ever to get 5-star ratings all around on every crash test measurement!

In what’s being hailed as an industry first, Tesla say its Model X is the first SUV to ever get five-star ratings in every category and sub-category of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration‘s (NHTSA) crash tests.

In addition, the all-electric vehicle maker says the NHTSA found that drivers and passengers in a Model X have a 93% probability of walking away unscathed from a serious crash.

Tesla attributes the Model X’s impressive performance on crash tests to the fact that it is all electric.

“The rigid, fortified battery pack that powers Model X is mounted beneath the floor of the vehicle creating a center of gravity so low that Model X has the lowest rollover probability of any SUV on the road,” the company notes on its blog. “No other SUV has ever come close to meeting and exceeding this rollover requirement.”

Of course with a list price starting at $82,500, the Model X is out of most people’s price range!

So with that in mind, we’ve compiled a list of other SUVs with 5-star ratings overall in the NHTSA crash tests, as compiled by Kelley Blue Book. Some cost only a fourth of what the Model X does!
