Weeks after a gigantic rabbit died in the care of United Airlines after a transatlantic flight, the group that owns the animal says it’s still waiting for compensation and answers from the company, according to the Associated Press.

Group threatens to sue United Airlines over death of giant rabbit

An attorney representing the owners says the airline has yet to explain how Simon, who was about 3-and-a-half feet long and weighed 20 pounds, died after an April 20 London to Chicago flight — or why he was immediately cremated. The group is seeking to recoup the cost of buying and transporting the animal — an estimated $2,300 — as well as future earnings. They say Simon could have grown to up to 40 pounds, making him the largest rabbit in the world.

“United has taken no action to rectify this,” attorney Guy Cook said Monday, raising the issue of how United generally treats animals in its care. “This case is about more than one rabbit.”

Cook says the group he is representing bought Simon with the intent to display him at this summer’s Iowa State Fair, as well as at other events in order to raise money for the fair.

For its part, United spokesman Charles Hobart says that the airline has reached “a satisfactory resolution” with the rabbit’s breeder, who is in the U.K. but declined to answer questions related to those raised by the group that purchased the animal.

The incident comes in the wake of other high-profile public-relations snafus for United, including an incident where a man was dragged off a plane for refusing to give up his seat and one in which teenage girls were barred from a flight for wearing leggings.
