Making a phone call from an airplane that’s in-flight is now legal in several European countries. Sounds cool, right?
Well, maybe not. While the FCC has banned cell phone calls on planes, now we’ve got Internet calls using Skype or Google Chat and no FAA or FCC prohibition on those. So it’s up to airlines if they want to allow it.
The flight attendants’ union is strident about this being an unwelcome distraction. I’ve taken the hint and switched to doing IM chats with video so I can see the person I’m communicating with but not noisily talk to them.
