Following a recent Twitter hack, much light has been cast on Internet security in the social media realm.

The hackers got people’s email addresses and encrypted passwords, and the attack appeared to impact several other major media sites.

‘This attack was not the work of amateurs, and we do not believe it was an isolated incident,’ Twitter wrote on its blog. ‘The attackers were extremely sophisticated, and we believe other companies and organizations have also been recently similarly attacked.’

More and more, hackers are not going after individuals, but the big institutions.

When it comes to social media, I have a suggestion for you.

Try segregating your life online for Facebook, Twitter, Instagram or anything like that. Use a separate free email account to tie your social medial accounts to. Then don’t do anything else from that email address.

You’ll also want to use a different email for other things like ecommerce. Want to go one step further?  Have a third email address you use to set up online banking or any financial transactions.

And be sure you use a different password for each and every social media site.

Be careful out there. You can’t prevent these sites from getting hacked, so you’ve got to do what’s in your control.
