It seems that not a week goes by without an announcement of new lower price points in the cellphone world. The reality is if you haven’t shopped your monthly rate in the last few months, you’re almost certainly paying too much.
The latest news is actually a twofer. First, Cricket has announced new lower rates of $35 a month for unlimited talk and text, plus 2.5 GB of data. If you want 5G, you’ll have to pay $45 a month.
Cricket is a discount brand that’s actually AT&T’s foray into discounting. AT&T has cordoned off this separate brand to offer the same exact service under a different name. The $35 a month deal is great for individuals. It is a superior offer on a great network. Just know they will require you to have the bill auto charged to a credit card or debited from a checking account.
The second deal comes from GoSmart Mobile, which is T-Mobile’s discount brand. GoSmart Mobile matches the Cricket offer with unlimited talk, text, and 2.5 GB of data for $35. But GoSmart bests Cricket by offering 5 GB for $40 a month — $5 a month cheaper than Cricket.
A word about data usage: I’m on my phone all the time and I use just under 3 GBs of data a month. So 5 GB from either provider would be enough for 99.99% of most smartphone users.
Both companies are on GSM, which is the worldwide standard, so the variety of phones that are compatible with these offers is ginormous.
We’re headed on a straight line to lower and lower rates. If I’m right, by late next year, you’ll be able to get cell service for $10 a month!
