People in the corporate world use Microsoft Office by rote, but that’s not the case in the small business market and the consumer market because of the expense. So Microsoft is trying to come up with a replacement business model and this is it.
Once you do the free download, you can run Office on your iPads, iPhones, Android phones, and Android tablets.

As a practical matter for the Androids, this will probably work better on the phablets and tablets, not the smaller Android screen phones. I have a phablet and my screen size is 6 inches or so and it displays very well.
This will be a big help for me. It used to be that I would get a lot of attachments that I would try to open up, and the screen on my phone would go blank. Now that problem will be solved for free.
Of course, in the desktop and laptop world, it’s still a king’s ransom to buy Office. If you want to save money in those environments, try OpenOffice.org for a free office suite. Or as an alternative, my wife uses Google Docs and loves it. It’s great for collaboration on a document or project among a few key players. Both options are free to use.
Free is a great price! Microsoft had come up with a new model because people weren’t paying for their bread and butter offering in the touch screen world.
