2014 is poised to be the breakthrough year for capable non-contract Androids that are dirt cheap.
Google will be the key influencer in this trend with its Moto G phone. The Moto G is a non-contract smartphone with 4.5-inch screen that’s available for $179 through Amazon and other retailers.
Huawei and ZTE are planning to bring the competition too.
While I was At CES, I saw the Huawei Ascend II with a 6.1-inch screen. This phone has such a powerful battery that it can be a charging station for another person’s phone! ZTE, meanwhile, is also ramping up for another incursion into the U.S. market.
All this action will put Apple under pressure to give up its high price points. Apple currently sells about a third of the smartphones in the U.S. But their market share will be under direct attack from these capable Androids.
So Apple will have to change its stripes unless it wants to become a boutique brand. And the best big news of all is that you will save money!
