Back up all material you have stored in the cloud

If you’re storing your files and other data in the cloud, you’d better also make a copy on your computer or other physical device.

There’s been a big fuss about a website called MegaUpload being shut down. It was one of the top websites for traffic in the entire world and functioned like a digital locker, the same basic idea of cloud computing. Many people used it for legit purposes, but some unfortunately were using it to store stolen content like music and movies.

So what did the U.S. Justice Department do? They and other organizations took a meat axe to the problem instead of scalpel and shut the site down entirely. Now people who were using MegaUpload for legitimate purposes, particularly those in the legal field to store briefings, can’t get to their documents.

It’s a classic case of those who were doing nothing wrong being caught up with those doing illegal activity.

To avoid losing access to your files in a similar situation, the only answer is to have your work backed up on your own computer, in addition to being out there in the cloud.

Law enforcement is in uncharted territory when it comes to the Internet and they often strike out in wrong way. You have to do the best you can to protect yourself.
