78 more Sears, Kmart stores are closing this year: Here’s when and where

More and more retailers are announcing store closings — and this time it’s Sears.

Over the past several years, national retailers have had to start adjusting to a new type of industry and new expectations from consumers. The rise in budget-conscious shoppers looking for bargains, increase in online sales and increased competition in the discount retail space are just some of the factors forcing big companies to make some big changes.

Sears Holdings announced this week that the company is closing an additional 78 stores nationwide — including 68 Kmarts, 3 Super K stores and 10 Sears stores.

According to the Consumerist, most of the stores set to close will begin liquidation soon. Sears stores will start on April 29, Kmart stores on May 12. Stores scheduled to close in September may begin their liquidation sales earlier.

According to Sears Chairman Eddie Lampert, the company is undergoing a “transformation,” during which it will focus less on retail stores and more on online sales, along with other more profitable opportunities.

“We’re focusing on our best members, our best categories and our best stores as we work to accelerate our transformation,” Lampert said in a statement.
