Wal-Mart is going head-to-head with Amazon in an effort to woo customers away from the online retail giant by offering same-day delivery to your home.

The nation’s largest retailer is testing the Wal-Mart To Go service in Philadelphia, northern Virginia, Minneapolis, San Jose, and San Francisco. All orders must be placed by noon and will be charged a flat fee of $10 regardless of order size for home delivery.

Once you place an order, then a Wal-Mart employee goes into action, manually packing up any of 5,000 items in stores that are eligible for To Go service — excluding apparel and shoes.

After packing, your finalized order is picked up by UPS and delivered to your door later that evening.

Wal-Mart and Amazon are both undeniable titans of retail.

Wal-Mart started with the late Sam Walton’s vision of a low-price emporium to end low-price emporiums. And Amazon started with Jeff Bezos’ idea of a new way to sell books that has continually morphed and changed as technology and market conditions have changed.

We’ll have to see how efficient To Go service is. But the idea of you having more ways to shop, I love that!
