Wal-Mart is going head-to-head with Amazon in an effort to woo customers away from the online retail giant with same-day delivery to stores.
Both companies are undeniable titans of retail. Wal-Mart started with the late Sam Walton’s vision of a low-price emporium to end low-price emporiums. And Amazon started with Jeff Bezos’ idea of a new way to sell books that has continually morphed and changed as technology and market conditions have changed.
Wal-Mart is now going nationwide with the Pick Up Today option they were just previously testing. The idea is you go online and order appliances, electronics and video games before 6 p.m. Then you receive an e-mail or text when your item is ready. You can then pick up your item(s) the same day until 10 p.m. at your local Wal-Mart store.
It’s not exactly a new idea. Best Buy has done it previously, but Wal-Mart could potentially make it so much bigger.
In business, as in life, you have to continually reinvent yourself and innovate or you’ll wind up as somebody’s lunch. Just because you were the top dog at one time doesn’t mean you’ll always be.
