If you’ve ever used a ride share app like Uber, you know how easy it is to just jump in the car and go without another thought.

But unfortunately, scammers are now using these services as a way to con people out of money! By disguising themselves as official Uber and Lyft drivers, criminals are not only stealing money from people, but could also put them in danger.

What you can do to protect yourself

Check the model of the car

The Uber and Lyft apps both display the make and model of the vehicle used by your designated driver. Double check to make sure the vehicle you’re getting into matches the one shown in your app.

Check the license plate

These ride share apps also show you the vehicle’s tag number. Make sure the license plate matches with the one shown in the app before you get in the car to avoid any trouble.

Don’t rely on a displayed logo

Scammers are using fake Uber and Lyft logos on their windshields to trick people in to believing they are real drivers. Don’t let your guard down just because the logo looks official.

Again, always make sure the vehicle and tag number matches the app — if not, just walk away!
