A popular brand of ready-to-eat hot dogs and sausages is being recalled because of “misbranding and an undeclared allergen,” according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS).

Grand Rapids, Michigan-based Kent Quality Foods Inc. issued the recall on Wednesday. It affects more than 308,000 pounds of hot dog and sausage products. The company, which sells to restaurants nationwide, discovered the problem on May 12 during an inventory.

Hot sausages, franks recalled due to ‘undeclared allergen’

The recall covers these 44 products, which may contain soy, an allergen that is not declared on the labels. That declaration is required by law.

“The establishment noticed that the label for the spice mixture used in the production of one of their Beef Polish sausage contained hydrolyzed soy protein as an ingredient,” the FSIS said in a press release. “However, the Beef Polish Sausage does not list the soy ingredient on the finish product label. Although the Beef Polish sausage product is the only product that is formulated with the spice mix containing the soy ingredient, there are several other ready-to-eat sausage and hot dog products made with beef, pork, and turkey that are implicated in this recall action due to potential cross contamination via shared equipment during the raw and ready-to-eat processing steps.”

Although there have been no reports of complaints from the meat, the government agency is concerned that some consumers may have the recalled food in their homes.

“The restaurants cook and prepare the product for consumers, who may take the product home as leftovers,” the FSIS says in a press release. “FSIS is concerned that some product may be in consumers’ refrigerators or freezers. Consumers who have purchased these products are urged not to consume them. These products should be thrown away or returned to the place of purchase.”

The recalled meat has the establishment number “EST. 5694” or “P-5694” inside the USDA mark of inspection, the FSIS said.

If consumers have questions or inquiries about the recall, they are encouraged to call Stephen Soet, the CEO of Kent Quality Foods Inc., at (616) 459-4595.

We recommend that if you have any leftovers in your fridge that contain hot dogs or other sausage products, you call the restaurant they came from to make sure the meat was not sourced from Kent Quality Foods.
