According to the National Hurricane Center, hurricane season runs from June 1 to November 30 every year. These storms can cause catastrophic damage to communities and families, and rescue efforts can last for months or even years.

Hurricane Dorian is one of the first major hurricanes of the season, and the storm is terrorizing the Bahamas along with much of the southeastern coast of the United States.

As officials with the federal, state and local governments track hurricane paths and evacuation strategies, non-profit organizations prepare to assist with relief efforts. The American Red Cross

The American Red Cross responds to an average of more than 62,000 disasters every year. The organization opens evacuation shelters, distributes food, water and other relief supplies, and helps affected communities create recovery plans after disasters.

You can donate online or call 1-800-HELP NOW (1-800-435-7669). You can also text REDCROSS to 90999 to give $10 to American Red Cross Disaster Relief.

Americares

Americares is a health-focused disaster relief organization. Offering several emergency programs, Americares sends emergency response teams in the first hours of a disaster and stays in the community until access to health care is fully restored. Learn more about how to donate here.

The Center for Disaster Philanthropy

The Center for Disaster Philanthropy started the 2019 Atlantic Hurricane Season Recovery Fund this year. The purpose of the fund is to support recovery efforts for the months — and even years — after a hurricane strikes a community. You can make a donation here.

Direct Relief

Direct Relief supports the immediate needs of victims by working with local partners to assess, respond and prepare for long-term recovery. In addition to rescue missions and medical triage, the organization focuses on developing plans to distribute food, water and shelter. Learn more here.
