How you can help veterans today

When you take an Uber ride today on Veterans Day, you’ll have the opportunity to donate $5 toward an estimated free 10,000 rides that the company will donate over the coming year. The rides will be given to vets by their employment counselors when they go for job interviews. It’s all part an initiative in conjunction with Joining Forces, a White House organization that supports service members, veterans and their families.

Here’s how riders can donate:

  • On Nov. 11, move the slider over to ‘VETS DAY’ in your Uber app.
  • Your uberX — sporting a new look in honor of Veterans Day — will pick you up.
  • At the end of your trip, you’ll get an SMS text message from Uber. All you have to do is reply YES to complete the donation.
  • After you donate, you’ll get a receipt for your trip, as well as a receipt for your donation.
  • Drivers will receive an email with instructions on how they can participate.

Lyft, meanwhile, is reportedly taking part in the initiative too, but no official word yet on their website or social media channels on how their involvement will shape up. So far all we know is this:

‘We’re donating thousands of rides and are proud to join the White House’s effort to help serve our nation’s veterans,’ a Lyft spokesperson told the Huffington Post. ‘Accessing transportation shouldn’t stand in the way of a veteran reentering the workforce.’
