On Wednesday, Toyota announced it was recalling 2.87 million cars because of a possible defect in emissions control units. This was following Tuesday’s news that 1.43 million cars were in need of repair due to a issue with air bag inflators, supplied by Sweden-based auto safety gear maker Autoliv Inc.
No injuries have resulted from either issue as of yet.
Several hybrid 2010-2012 Prius models have both detects, bringing the total number of cars affected to 3.37 million.
The evaporative fuel emissions control units were installed in Prius models, Auris compact hatchbacks and Corolla models 2006 to 2015. These units were susceptible to cracks which could lead to fuel leaks.
In addition, issues with air bag inflators were discovered in Prius models and Lexus CT200h cars made from 2010 to 2012, causing a small crack leading to the separation of the inflator chambers. According to Toyota, the inflator could then partially inflate and enter the vehicle interior, increasing the risk of injury.
So far, the company has been made aware of seven instances where a side curtain airbag partially inflated in parked Prius models. But, no injuries have occurred.
