The largest and most complex automotive recall in U.S. history is getting even larger.

Japanese air bag manufacturer Takata is set to add an additional 35 to 40 million more airbag inflators to its massive recall, nearly doubling what it is already the largest recall in U.S history.

Millions of the inflators have already been recalled because they can explode, sending metal fragments into a vehicle’s passenger compartment, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

The expanded recall could slow down the already arduous replacement process, as the company has struggled with supply challenges due to the enormous number of already recalled inflators.

Details about the expansion of the recall

The recall will be phased in over about three and a half years and will impact front air bags, as well as passenger and driver side air bags that don’t have a chemical necessary to absorb moisture. The issue is caused by a variety of factors, including time, temperature, humidity and moisture.

The faulty devices have led to at least 10 deaths in the U.S. so far and now involves 22 different vehicle brands. Check this list to see if your car is affected by the recall and how to get it repaired.

About a quarter of the 29 million air bags that were previously recalled have been replaced.
