One stalwart automaker has gotten the boot from Consumer Reports’ list of recommended vehicles.

Toyota has traditionally had a reputation for selling good reliable cars to people who don’t like cars. People look at Toyota when they want reliable transportation, not flash and style.

But Consumer Reports has pulled longtime favorites like the Camry, RAV 4 and Prius V off its list. Why the sudden change of heart? Because crash tests done by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) showed those models didn’t fare well in controlled crashes. The IIHS cited a high possibility of injury.

Not being on the Consumer Reports recommended buy list is brutal for Toyota because the average  reader of that publication is looking more for reliability than for excitement in a car. So Toyota has vowed to make the necessary structural changes to remedy the problems.

Despite the setback, Toyota is still doing well when it comes to reliability.

The most reliable cars according to Consumer Reports are:

  • Lexus
  • Toyota
  • Acura
  • Audi
  • Mazda
  • Infiniti
  • Volvo
  • Honda
  • GMC
  • Subaru

On the flip side, the least reliable brands are:

  • Mini
  • Lincoln
  • Ford
  • Cadillac
  • Dodge
  • Jeep
