New report: These vehicles have the best resale value

You may enjoy your vehicle now, but after a while it’s going to start showing its age and you may want to sell it. That’s why it literally pays to know what kind of resale value your vehicle has.

The recently announced 2019 J.D. Power Resale Value Awards lists vehicles with the best resale value after three years of ownership. If you’re thinking about buying a vehicle, you might want to consider these.

J.D. Power Best Resale Value Awards: And the winners are…

To determine which vehicles had the best resale value, J.D. Power evaluated 256 vehicle models and used wholesale records from January to June 2019.

The research covered 26 model-level segments. Big winners were the Lexus brand, which earned six awards, Honda, which received five awards, Toyota (four) and Porsche (three).

The vehicle with the best resale value in the entire industry was the GMC Sierra 3500. Let’s look at the results from the J.D. Power Resale Value Awards.

First up are the car segments, followed by SUV van and pickup segments. Model segments with only one vehicle listed are those where no other model performs above the segment average:

Car segments

  • Small car: Honda Fit, Scion iA, Toyota Yaris
  • Small premium car: Lexus CT, BMW i3, Mercedes-Benz CLA Class
  • Compact car: Honda Civic, Subaru WRX, Toyota Prius
  • Compact sporty car: Scion tC, Scion FR-S, Hyundai Veloster
  • Compact premium car: Lexus RC, Infiniti Q50, Lexus IS
  • Compact premium sporty car: Porsche Cayman, Audi TT
  • Midsize car: Honda Accord, Toyota Camry, Kia Optima
  • Midsize sporty car: Dodge Challenger, Ford Mustang
  • Midsize premium car: Lexus GS, Hyundai Genesis, Infiniti Q70
  • Midsize premium sporty car: Porsche 911, Chevrolet Corvette, Nissan GT-R
  • Large car: Dodge Charger, Toyota Avalon, Chysler 300
  • Large premium car: Porsche Panamera, Cadillac CT6, jaguar XJ8

  • Small SUV: Subaru Crosstrek, Honda HR-V, Volkswagen Tiguan
  • Small premium SUV: Audi Q3, BMW X1, Mercedes-Benz GLA

The list above is a valuable resource for car shoppers looking for vehicles that can hold their value, says J.D. Power’s Jonathan Banks, vice president of vehicle valuations & analytics.

“One of the biggest concerns for many new-vehicle owners is depreciation,” Banks says in a written statement. “Our transaction database shows the models that have the lowest depreciation costs, which can be very helpful to new-car buyers when deciding on their purchase.”
