Destination: New York, NY
About this photo: Early evening cruising in NY Harbor–The Staten Island Ferry in the foreground and the lower Manhattan skyline in the background.
Best deal found: The best deal in NYC is the one pictured–the Staten Island Ferry affords amazing views of the skyline, bridges, harbor and the Statue of Liberty. . .and is FREE. Wow. Best cheap eats: Curry Alley, 6th Avenue between 1st and 2nd Avenue has a dozen or more Indian restaurants that try to outdo each other to provide more good food at a lower price than should be possible on Manhattan. Our lunch at Raj Mahal was four courses–soup, appetizer, entree, and dessert. . .and $6 a person. Wow. Delicious too.

Destination: Sana’a, Yemen
About this photo: This is the ‘door of Yemen’ in Sana’a, Yemen. I was there over the Christmas holidays. Old Yemen is great because you can entertain yourself for hours with just the shops there. There are thousands of years of history all around. The Old City of Sana’a is a World Heritage Site.
Best deal found: I loaded up on silver jewelry and paintings. Tourism in Yemen has taken a big hit because of internal conflict, so there are plenty of deals to be had. I recommend taking a Yemeni guide who has shopping experience so you can get the best deals. My real secret to getting the best deals in Yemen is wearing top to bottom full veil when I shop and letting my guide do the talking, so I get Yemeni, rather than ‘Amreeki’ prices.

Destination: Yosemite National Park
About this photo: I took this “classic Yosemite view” photo from Glacier Point, in June 2010. The Yosemite valley is very crowded in summertime, but I found escaping into the mountains left much of the crowd behind!

Destination: Machu Picchu, Peru
About this photo: View from the Guard House in Machu Picchu.

Destination: Costa Ric
About this photo: This is an active Arenal volcano in Costa Rica. The steam comes from lava which is more visible at night. Don’t pay $10 a person to enter the national park because the dirt road ends few hundred yards past the entrance gate and the view is the same as from the road around the volcano. There are only few short flat trails around the volcano. It’s prohibited to hike up to it.
Best deal found: Pay about $6 to enter Observatory Lodge premises to be able to hike through lush rain forest to the top of the inactive Cerro Chato volcano with turquoise lake on the bottom of the crater. Be back by sunset to get a drink at the Lodge and watch red lava explosions and flow. Dinner is overpriced and low quality though. We stayed at good Las Colinas hotel in La Fortuna for $80 a night, breakfast, internet, and parking included.

Destination: San Juan, Puerto Rico
About this photo: This picture is standing out side, backside of the main building of the Rio Mar Beach Resort in San Juan, Puerto Rico.
Best deal found: My husband and I just came back for a 7 day cruise. We added an extra day and night so we wouldn’t have to rush back to the airport after the cruise. We did not have any hotel reservations, so I was a little nervous being at a place we’ve never been. We rented a car for $25.00 and started to drive. We came upon the entrance and decided to go in. The best deal for such a beautiful resort was offered to us since at only $99.00 for a 5 star hotel/resort! That place is amazing.
