TRAVEL TIPS & TIDBITS

Price Hike at Hertz
Expect a price hike on Hertz, Dollar and Thrifty car rentals beginning June 14 at U.S. locations. For airport car rental locations, Hertz will increase prices $5 per day and $20 per week. Off-airport rental rates will rise $3 per day and $10 per week. Clark has a simple method for assuring the best rate on a rental car. Find out how! And don’t forget that you can name your own price for a rental car at Priceline.

Music at the Vatican
The Vatican Museums has resumed its evening summer concert series. ‘There is nowhere in the world that has an auditorium with frescoes by Michelangelo and Raphael, decorated with Greek and Roman sculptures, illuminated by moonlight hidden behind the dome of St. Peter’, Vatican Museums Director Antonio Paolucci said. The ‘Music of the Museums’ evening concerts accompanies the Vatican Museums’ special Friday evening entrance (the monumental door of the Pope’s Museums will open at sunset), a reserved visit from 7-11pm including the Sistine Chapel (through October 30, except in August). The music program ranges from classical and jazz to folk and film scores. The hour-long performances will be held outdoors at the Vatican’s the Cortile della Pigna Fridays at 8:30pm.

  • At Six Flags Fiesta Texas, BATMAN: The Ride opens May 23 as the world’s first 4D, free-fly wing coaster. Magnetic fins will cause guests to flip as they fly over the top of a 12-story hill and two beyond vertical drops.
  • Opening May 22, SeaWorld San Antonio’s Pacific Point Preserve will have the look and feel of a Pacific coast town where guests connect with sea lions and other coastal wildlife. The new realm will also feature all-new educational elements designed to inform guests about animals and how to protect them in their natural habitat.

Opening June 6, the 65,000-square-foot building will feature activities that make learning fun for children up to age 10. The Witte Museum’s Discover the Ice Age exhibit: Mammoths, saber-tooth cats, bears, cave people and gigantic ‘terror birds’ last seen in Texas and Florida make this exhibit an exciting and educational exhibition about life during Earth’s last Ice Age.
  • Opening May 23, Discover the Ice Age features fossils, casts and several life-sized animatronic models of animals with scientifically accurate movements, coloration, sounds and fur.
