TRAVEL TIPS & TIDBITS

Curbside Service Kicked to the Curb?
Carry-on bags have become the smart way to travel. Skip the curb and skip the counter lines! The concept that is finally taking hold may just be triggering airlines to eliminate curbside baggage check-in all together at airports beyond their hubs. American Airlines cited low usage when it recently cut curbside service at nearly 40 domestic airports, include Lambert-St. Louis. American still offers the service in 26 cities, including its hub airports. Find out if your destination airport offers curbside service at American Airlines

WWII Tunnels Open
Experience a new adventure tour of an incredible time capsule hidden beneath The White Cliffs of Dover — Winston Churchill’s wartime tunnels. Abandoned and vandalised since the end of WWII, the labyrinth of tunnels was carved out of the chalk in just 100 days after a visit by Churchill in July 1940. The shelter was built along with a gun battery just 21.5 miles from France. By December 10, the still incomplete shelter were garrisoned by four officers and 118 men from Royal Artillery. The complex was deliberately destroyed in the 70s, when the original three entrance tunnels were collapsed and filled in with rubble. They were rediscovered when a small hole in the ground was spotted, during work by the National Trust on the site. Experts found most of the tunnels had survived.
A visit is not for the fainthearted. Visitors must be over age 12, in good health and prepared for a 45-minute walk from the White Cliffs Visitor Centre. The hard-hat descent, lit by handheld and head flashlight, is described as ‘an adventure in a dark, dirty and wet environment, and is not suitable for those who are claustrophobic or unsteady.’
Fan Bay Deep Shelter will be open daily through September 6, then weekdays only until the end of September. Adult admission, £10 (about $15.50). Book timed tickets in advance online or by phone 0844-249-1895.
