TRAVEL TIPS & TIDBITS

Airline News
Delta Air Lines blames Emirates, Etihad and Qatar Airways — the three big ‘Gulf carriers’ of the Middle East — in its decision to reduce flight service from Atlanta to Dubai. The carrier says that those three airlines have flooded the U.S. market with seats. Beginning October 1, Delta will offer 4-5 nonstop flights per week. Delta hopes to resume daily service in the spring of ’16.
American, Delta and United are pushing the government to curtail U.S. access of its Gulf rivals. They all allege that the three Gulf carriers receive unfair subsidies that allow them to offer seats to the U.S. that exceed demand.

Currently, United Airlines offers nonstop service between Washington and Dubai and between Washington and Kuwait (with onward service to Bahrain).
Qatar Airways plans to add Atlanta to Doha service in 2016.

Car Rental Tip
Everywhere you turn, you face optional fees! A particularly dreaded fee is the extra charge for an additional driver on a car rental contract. But, here’s a tip: Avis, Budget and Enterprise allow a spouse or domestic partner as an additional driver without extra cost. The waiver also applies to business colleagues.
Alamo, Dollar, Hertz and Thrifty all charge between $9.99 and $13.50 per day additional. National charges for additional drivers but waives the fee for Emerald Club members (free to join).
The extra driver fee can sometimes be avoided by booking through Costco, or using membership numbers for AAA, AARP or USAA.
