Tunnel Opens in Europe
The world’s longest and deepest train tunnel – dubbed the Gotthard Base Tunnel – is finally open following 17 years of construction. The tunnel measures 57 kilometers long (35.4 miles) and 2,300 meters deep (7,546 feet.)
Inside the tunnel, dual tracks will allow passengers to travel to and from northern and southern Switzerland in minutes, and will help connect neighboring countries. Typically, the 17-minute trip would take between 45 minutes to one hour, but the speed of the train, the lack of elements to deal with outside and the direct path make this the ideals train transport between German-language and Italian-language Switzerland.
With faster and more frequent connections, the Swiss government is hoping that the Gotthard Base Tunnel will be a compelling reason to explore the north and south of Switzerland by public transport

NOTE: Airline fees can and often do exceed the cost of your flight! Additional charges now apply to budget and sale rates on most airlines for a carry-on bag, checked baggage and advance seat assignments. The least expensive fees are charged when these options are purchased during the ticket booking process. Fees climb higher after flights are reserved and even higher when adding these options at airport check-in. Kayak offers the most up-to-date Fees Chart for all domestic and international airlines.
