TRAVEL TIPS & TIDBITS

Reserve a Sunrise
Beginning February 1, visitors in personal or rental vehicles wishing to view sunrise at Haleakala National Park will need to make sunrise viewing reservations. The new reservation system is being implemented to ensure visitor safety, protect natural and cultural resources, and provide a quality experience at the summit during sunrise hours between 3 and 7 a.m. The fee is $1.50 per vehicle.

The one-day sunrise reservation will not be sold at the park but is available online, up to 60 days ahead of the date of the sunrise visit. The reservation cannot be transferred. To enter the Summit District between 3 and 7 a.m., the reservation holder must be present and show both the one-day sunrise reservation receipt (for that day) and a photo ID.
Due to limited parking, visitors without a sunrise viewing reservation will have to wait until after 7 a.m. to enter the park.
There is no refund or exchange of the reservation due to inclement weather or change of plans.
Before February 1, sunrise viewing parking spaces will continue to be available without advanced reservation, on a first-come, first-served basis.
Haleakala National Park is home to Maui’s highest peak. Rising 10,023 feet above sea level, Haleakala ‘house of the sun’ is where demigod Maui lassoed the sun, slowing its passage so people had more time to dry kapa (cloth) and grow food. Sunrise at the summit of Haleakala has been a visitor attraction since the late 1800s when Samuel Clemens wrote: ‘It was the sublimest spectacle I ever witnessed, and I think the memory of it will remain with me always.’

Apps for the Airport
What’s the wait time at the airport to get through TSA security? Download an app to view real-time traveler tips or official status from the FAA.
flightSpeak: One app provides airport info for 301 airports and 53,063 stores (review store locations, descriptions, open hours, traveler ratings, coupons). Find security wait times, WiFi info and more.
MiFlight: Provides crowd-sourced information on TSA checkpoint wait times and suggests alternate lines with minimal waits.
Fleet: Get real-time security line updates from fellow air travelers near you, official airline updates and tips on places to eat and shop while passing time in the airport. (only for iPhones)
My TSA: Gives you 24/7 access to information from the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) in real-time operating status for U.S. airports from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). The app allows travelers to report wait times in excess of 31 minutes, as well as see wait times reported by fellow travelers. The tool also assists travelers on what items are allowed in carry-on or checked baggage; information on ID requirements, liquids rules, and tips for packing and dressing to speed through security. Available on Google Play and iTunes.
