TripAdvisor Selling Cuba
TripAdvisor has received a license from the U.S. Treasury Department’s Office of Foreign Assets Control to sell travel services to Cuba for both U.S. and international users. Travelers can now compare prices of hotels in major Cuban cities including Havana, Varadero and Santiago de Cuba along with flights, cultural tours, attractions, and short-term rentals.
TripAdvisor, like all other travel sellers in the U.S., can only facilitate Cuba travel that falls under one 12 approved reasons, which include educational activities, family visits and humanitarian projects. TripAdvisor said it expects to start selling Cuba within the next couple of months.

Retailer Branded Hotels
The home-design retailer West Elm, a division of Williams-Sonoma, is taking its brand into the hotel industry, with plans for hotels in five cities: Detroit, Indianapolis, Minneapolis, Charlotte and Savannah. Another 10 hotels are on the drawing board.
Each property will be designed to compliment its neighborhood and surroundings. Also, each location will have either an adjacent store or a smaller retail shop onsite. Each will also feature a grab-and-go cafe bistro or a restaurant that will be open to both locals and hotel guests.
The brand will offer locals a free, 10-week ‘West Elm Academy’ in each city – a hospitality training course with a goal of hiring as many academy grads as possible to work in the hotel.
An app will help guests to check-in, to order room service, or to purchase items seen in the hotel or even the bed they’re relaxing on.
The first hotel is slated to open in late 2018 in Detroit’s Midtown neighborhood, home of Wayne State University, the Detroit Institute of Arts, the luxury watch-and-bicycle brand Shinola and an up-and-coming hipster scene.
The Indianapolis hotel is planned for a former Coca-Cola bottling plant in a beautiful 1930s art deco building with a striking white terracotta facade. It’s in a busy shopping and cultural district, amid bars, restaurants and small shops, near the popular Indy Reads bookstore and the Old National Centre concert venue. Next year, that same neighborhood will see the opening of a new location for the Kurt Vonnegut Memorial Library, a museum honoring the late writer and Indy native.
