TRAVEL TIPS & TIDBITS

Get Your Dog Fix
The Kauai Humane Society, a shelter for domestic animals just west of Lihue, lets tourists take adoption-ready canines for a day of frolicking at the beach, on a trail or in an arboretum. The dogs are at least 6 months old, fully vaccinated and spayed or neutered. Shelter staff works with them to make sure they’re ready to be good citizens once they’re away from the cages and exercise yards. The shelter provides a towel, bottled water, poop bags and a collar, leash and vest with a bright ‘Adopt Me’ sign. Visitors must be at least 18 years old and sign a liability waiver. Your credit card number will be recorded for a $200 deposit (in the event the dog is not returned). Dogs must be in an enclosed vehicle (no open convertible or truck open bed). Dogs must be on leash at all times.
Dog-friendly places to visit include:
Mahaulepu Beach, Poipu
Kalapaki Beach, Lihue
Sleeping Giant, Wailua
Moalepe Trail, Wailua
Wailua Abroretum, Wailua
Koke’e State Park/Waimea Canyon

Most beaches allow dogs unless they are county-maintained beaches or parks. Kapa’a Beach Path is the only exception.

New BYOB on Cruise Lines
Until now, guests were only allowed to carry non-alcoholic beverages onto ships at the start of their voyage when sailing on Carnival Cruises. Now, the cruise line will allow passengers to carry alcohol-free drinks back on-board after port calls on island destinations.
‘Small quantity of non-alcoholic beverages (i.e., sparkling water, sodas, juice, and milk) packaged in cans or cartons may be brought on board as well as Carnival branded bottled water previously purchased on board,’ said Carnival Senior Cruise Director John Heald.  ‘A small quantity is considered a maximum of 12 sealed, unopened cans/cartons of 12 ounces each or less per person.’
The only alcoholic beverage allowed to be brought onboard by adult guests 21 or older is a 750 ml bottle of sealed wine or champagne per person at embarkation. All drinks carried on at the beginning of the voyage must be in their carry-on luggage. Any alcohol purchased in ports ashore will be retained by the ship and returned upon disembarkation.
Norwegian Cruise Line has no restrictions on the amount of or time when non-alcoholic beverages may be brought on by its guests. NCL will also hold onto alcoholic beverages until the end of the cruise with the exception of any amount or size of allowed bottles of wine and champagne.
Royal Caribbean International allows guests to bring on a maximum of two 750 ml bottles of wine or champagne at embarkation only. No other alcoholic nor non-alcoholic drinks may be brought onboard. Additional liquors purchased ashore will also be retained until disembarkation.
