TRAVEL TIPS & TIDBITS

Liberty Island Museum Planned
Plans were unveiled on Friday for a new, 26,000-square-foot Statue of Liberty Museum on Liberty Island in New York Harbor that is projected to open to the public in 2019.
The $70 million museum is part of a Liberty Island beautification plan that calls for new landscaping and lighting.
The current Statue of Liberty Museum, located inside the Statue of Liberty monument, is only accessible to a small portion of the statue’s 4.3 million annual visitors due to security measures that were put in place following September 11, 2001.

Access to the new museum will be free with the purchase of a ferry ticket to visit Liberty Island and Ellis Island.
Liberty Island will continue to be open to visitors during construction of the new museum. Ferry tickets and boat schedules to Ellis Island and the Statue of Liberty are available at Statue Cruises.
The museum will have a mural at the entrance, featuring stars crafted from the original iron bars (created by engineer Gustave Eiffel) that supported the Statue of Liberty for 100 years until they were removed and preserved during the 1986 centennial restoration. Exhibits and artifacts will be on display, including the statue’s original torch. There will also be a green roof-scape.

Making a List…
For some, it’s a bit too early to mention that it’s the gift-giving season, but soon we’ll all be traveling again during the holiday season.
Here are some unique gift ideas to give yourself now, or your favorite traveler later:

  • The HighView iPad Hanger, $24.99 at Amazon, gives a more comfortable viewing of iPad 1, 2, 3 or 4 tablets. Hang the tablet from a car headrest, airplane seat, bus, or train seat with this flexible and lightweight device.
  • The Bobble Water Bottle filters out chlorine and impurities from ordinary tap water. It essentially replaces up to 300 disposable bottles before a new carbon filter is needed. It can be infused with fruit and is also BPA and PVC-free. Perfect for packing empty and filling it up at the airport. $14.99.
  • A 4-in-1 Universal Travel Adapter, $25 at Flight001, features 4 color-coded plugs and 1 adapter for use in 150 countries.
  • The HoodiePillow U-Shaped Inflatable Travel Pillow, $13.99 at Bed Bath and Beyond, is a unique U-shaped inflatable pillow, is designed to provide a convenient and cozy solution for your comfort needs on the go. Made of sweatshirt fabric and inflatable for easy storage.
  • Fresh flowers for your hotel room? Why not? Don’t pass that gorgeous flower market without taking some to your place. Pop the posies in a collapsible vase and enjoy! Most styles are completely flat and expand with water. Most under $10
  • Give the gift of a CityPASS. The coupon booklet saves up to 50% off the regular admission prices to top attractions in the U.S. and Canada. Prices vary by age and city, $30-$114.
  • Treat someone to an Airbnb gift card and they’ll think of you while exploring a far flung country. The credit is added to their account and never expires. From $25

The least expensive fees are charged when these options are purchased during the ticket booking process. Fees climb higher after flights are reserved and even higher when adding these options at airport check-in. Kayak offers the most up-to-date Fees Chart for all domestic and international airlines.
