TRAVEL TIPS & TIDBITS

NYC Grows Up
The 27-acre Hudson Yards development complex on Manhattan’s Far West Side (west of 10th Avenue from 23rd to 42nd streets) will have the tallest outdoor observation deck in the Big Apple, beating out the view from the Empire State Building by 50 feet (the Empire State Building’s 86th-floor Observation Deck is 1,050 feet high).
The deck will be 1,100 feet in the air and stretch more than 5,000 square feet, boasting spectacular 360-degree views of Manhattan and beyond. The observation deck will be a part of the 92-story skyscraper 30 Hudson Yards, the fourth-tallest building in the city when completed in 2019.

The deck will have something for adrenaline junkies, too – a ‘thrill-seeking element’ – the details of which are still being worked out. A restaurant and bar are also in the works for the deck.
The entire project will be self-sufficient, thanks to a cogeneration plant that will keep the complex running even if the entire Eastern Seaboard shuts down.  Garbage bins will be replaced by chutes that will send waste flying at 45 mph to one central location.

Mobile Welcomes Carnival Cruise Lines
Carnival Cruise Line will begin operating a year-long schedule of four- and five-day cruises from Mobile, Alabama to Mexico starting in fall 2016.
The 2,056-passenger Carnival Fantasy will undergo a massive refurbishment project in dry dock before the vessel is put back into service. Some of the additions being made include Guy’s Burger Joint (developed with Food Network star Guy Fieri), two poolside watering holes – the RedFrog Rum Bar and BlueIguana Tequila Bar – and the BlueIguana Cantina Mexican-themed restaurant.
Carnival Fantasy will also feature a massive spa, a water park, an adults-only retreat, casino gambling and more.
Cruises from Mobile will begin on November 9, 2016, and will continue through November 27, 2017.
For the four-day trips, the ship will take passengers to the island of Cozumel, and the five-day voyages will sail to Costa Maya or Progreso.
