Local Led Tours
Who better to explore a city with than an enthusiastic, knowledgeable local? Check out these free and low-cost tours in Europe:

  • This Is My Athens matches local volunteers for free personalized tours such as food, the arts or the outdoors far from the tourist trail.
  • A new Paris start-up, INSIDR, rents tourists pre-paid smartphones with unlimited 4G data, local calls and texts, and a map with GPS navigation for select locations, and for guided walks. The phone also comes with three WhatsApp groups with 70 locals on hand to give advice and recommendations. A daily app message gives the weather forecast, updates on transport, and day trip suggestions. Rentals cost are €29 for 1-3 days, €45 for 4-7 days and €6 per day for stays of eight days or more.
  • Dubliners share recommendations, local history and cultural knowledge with tourists over a free pint of Guinness at The Little Museum of Dublin.
  • Vienna with Locals offers an eclectic range of activity-based tours by Viennese locals. Choose from a glimpse of the city’s fashion world from a working model, an erotic art crawl featuring masters like Egon Schiele and Gustav Klimt or even shopping for traditional dirndl dresses. The site’s selection of ‘Lovely Places’ includes Vienna’s first vegan sushi restaurant and a secret hilltop swimming pool with amazing views. Tours start from €22 per person (minimum three to a group).
  • Enjoy a leisurely walking tour with Slow Travel Berlin. Soak up the city’s rich history and cultural heritage with a long-term resident, many of them journalists and academics. In-depth tours cost from €15 per person for a 2-3 hour tour.

If your next destination isn’t listed here, simply Google: free local tour – and the city. Just about every medium to large city across the globe will have an option or two to choose from. Or, Google: hop on hop off – and your city destination. This option gives you from 24- to 48-hours to explore set routes around town with route narration. Jump off at a particular point of interest and then jump back on the next bus (15-20 minute cycles) when you’re ready to see another attraction.
Plan and take your own walking tour – free! Clark shares how to use Google Maps overseas with no data usage on your phone or device. Pre-downloaded maps can be accessed offline without the need for WiFi.

Autumn in Dallas
Named one of ‘America’s Best Pumpkin Festivals’ by Fodor’s Travel, MSN Travel and Country Living, this year’s event at the Dallas Arboretum and Botanical Garden, September 17 to November 23.
The Dallas Arboretum was just named one of the 15 most breathtaking gardens in the world by Architectural Digest.
More than 90,000 pumpkins are sprouting in the Texas Panhandle this month, on their way to being featured in this year’s Autumn at the Arboretum national fall festival. For the 11th year, Autumn at the Arboretum will include the popular one-acre Pumpkin Village, featuring artful arrangements of tens of thousands of pumpkins, gourds, squash, bales of hay and cornstalks. They are used to create pumpkin houses that represent nature to reflect the ‘Art of the Pumpkin’.
Set amidst the garden’s remaining summer flowers, and 150,000 fall blooms like chrysanthemums, copper plants, and firebush, it will open daily from 9A-5P.
The popular Haybale Maze will also return with the Tom Thumb Pumpkin Patch offering pumpkins for purchase and the Great Pumpkin Search.
General Garden Admission is $15 adults; $12 Seniors; $10 ages 3-12. On-site self-parking or parking garage is $15 ($8 booked online).

NOTE: Airline fees can and often do exceed the cost of your flight! Additional charges now apply to discount rates on most airlines for a carry-on bag, checked baggage and advance seat assignments. The least expensive fees are charged when these options are purchased during the ticket booking process. Fees climb higher after flights are reserved and even higher when adding these options at airport check-in. Kayak offers the most up-to-date Fees Chart for all domestic and international airlines.
