Airline & Travel News (it’ll cost you!)
Southwest Airlines will increase its EarlyBird Check-In fees for select flights starting August 29.
Previously the carrier charged $15 for any nonstop flight but now will be $15, $20, or $25 per flight, depending on availability and route.
EarlyBird Check-In doesn’t guarantee an A boarding position but improves your seat selection options to help you get your favorite seat. The service automatically checks in a passenger and assigns a boarding position within 36 hours of your flight’s departure, or 12 hours before general boarding positions become available.
The only way to guarantee an A boarding pass outside those groups is to pay the Upgraded Boarding fee at the gate which can be as much as $50 one-way. Other ways are to purchase a Business Select fare or have status in the Rapid Rewards frequent-flier program.
JetBlue will raise checked baggage fees to $30 for the first piece and $40 for a second piece, up from $35. See all increases on their website.
Expect legacy airlines to quickly match the increase!
Southwest Airlines still allows two checked bags free. Spirit and Frontier charge $50 for the first bag; $40 for a second.
Use this packing trick to avoid a checked bag fee!
Ready to sign-up for TSA PreCheck? Save yourself a trip to the airport! An enrollment center to sign up for the trusted traveler program is now open at a Staples in Marietta at 2535 Dallas Highway.
Another PreCheck enrollment center will open at Staples in Alpharetta on September 7, located at 945 N Point Dr.
Travelers with PreCheck can scoot through expedited screening lines with wait times of under five minutes. Keep your shoes on, laptops and liquids in your bag as you proceed through security.
The cost of $85 to enroll is good for five years.

The fall months of September and October are an idyllic time to visit Newfoundland and Labrador with vibrantly colored backdrops, cooler weather, and plenty of adventures and traditional festivities to explore.
On the Bonavista Peninsula (3.5-hour drive from St. John’s), boutique inns such as Fisher’s Loft Inn in Port Rexton offer October rates starting at $125 CAD per night with a minimum two-night stay. October rates start at $120 CAD per night at the Russelltown Inn in Bonavista.
Bonavista Adventure Tours offers outdoor adventures through October including historical walking, boating and hiking tours, as well as foraging and beach boil ups. Often referred to as a “mug-up,” Newfoundland boil-ups are a local favorite tradition where groups of friends and family gather on the beach for tea and cooking over the open fire. The Forage & Beach Boil Up excursion starts with foraging for natural ingredients such as berries, plants, and seafood to be cooked during the boil-up. Priced at $120 CAD per person, the four-hour experience also includes samples of salt fish, lobster, cod, mussels and moose.
From September 1-October 28, Artisan Inn and Vacation Homes in Trinity (3-hour drive from St. John’s) offers a three-night Hike and Dine package. The package Included is a three-night stay in an Artisan Inn room or vacation home, daily continental breakfast, two dinners and a set of maps of seven local trails for self-guided hikes. Packages start at $137 CAD per night, per person.
The Hike Discovery Trail Network on the Bonavista Peninsula of Eastern Newfoundland offers a stunning coastal trail system filled with sea cliffs and barrens.
The East Coast Trail network links together 32 historic communities from Portugal Cove, to Cape St. Francis, to Cappahayden with 186 miles of world-class hiking. Pick along the trails while passing lighthouses, abandoned settlements, sea stacks, and deep fjords.
