TRAVEL TIPS & TIDBITS

Save on Hotels
There are some new features from HotelTonight and Expedia that offer special and personalized deals that can save big $$ on hotel stays!
HotelTonight will offer users a once per day deal for 15 minutes only. The initial cost per stay is unknown. Users have to swipe within the app to unlock the deal, and if not within the 15 minutes (a clock clicks down to zero), then the deal is gone.
To test this, Skift opened the HotelTonight app Tuesday morning in New York City and saw Today’s Daily Drop for $??? atop its hotel listings. Swiping to view the deal revealed a $133 rate for a stay Tuesday night at the Lord & Moris property in Times Square. It regularly sells on HotelTonight for $215. The total rate through HotelTonight, including taxes and fees, was $170, which was a bargain compared with the lowest published rate, $209.57 including taxes and fees, for the Lord & Moris the same evening from Hotels.com. The app also allowed the addition of a second night for a base rate of $108.

About 1,000 hotels are currently taking part in the HotelTonight Daily Drop.
Stays can be booked up to 100 days in advance.
Download the app here.
At Expedia, there’s Add-On Advantage with a new twist.
Customers who book a flight, car or vacation package can add a discounted hotel stay at any time until the day of the trip.
The special hotel rates are only visible to Expedia customers who have already booked a flight, car, or vacation package, and the hotels stay comes with discounts up to 43%.

Coming to Charleston
Fort Sumter is where the first shots of the Civil War were fired. Soon the area will see the opening of the $100 million, 40,000-square-foot International African American Museum with captivating exhibits and views of the Charleston Harbor.
Ship voyage records reveal that nearly half of the enslaved Africans who were shipped to North America disembarked in Charleston. Many slaves took their first steps on American soil on this patch of land, which was once the largest wharf in North America.
Historians estimate that more than 90% of all African-Americans can trace at least one ancestor to this land.
Eighteen years ago, former Charleston mayor Joe Riley pledged to build an iconic museum that honors that heritage and illuminates the achievements cultivated from that regrettable past.
Since then, 37 other museums dedicated to African-American history and culture have been constructed. However, IAAM supporters contend that this land grants it a distinctive magnetism.
The museum will include eight exhibition districts that guide visitors from the 17th century in West Africa to present-day communities. It will feature the Center for Family History, an immersive genealogical archive that will provide resources to help visitors trace their ancestry.
It’s expected that the facility will open in 2020. Follow the updates on Facebook.
