TRAVEL TIPS & TIDBITS

Basic Economy Fares
Extra fees exclusive of basic economy airfares is paying off big for the airlines, which raked in almost $60 billion in fees worldwide in 2017.
But American Airlines is the first carrier to make those gotchas a bit less punishing.
Starting on September 5, AA’s basic fare passengers will be allowed a carry-on bag in addition to a personal item like other Main Cabin fare passengers.
other basic economy restrictions still apply. For instance, without paying an additional fee, Basic Economy ticket holders cannot assign their seat until check-in 24 hours in advance of their flight. Also, tickets cannot be upgraded after purchase and same-day flight changes or standby options are not permitted.

Now let’s see how Delta and United respond to this?
______

In other airlines news, CEO Gary Kelly says Southwest Airlines will not fix what’s not broke. Namely, the two things that the airline is heralded for: two free checked bags and no cost ticket changes (although price differences may apply).
Southwest has an open boarding process yet passengers can pay from $15 each way to jump ahead in the boarding line. The maximum price for the priority boarding was increased this year. For example, the fee to pre-board a Chicago to Phoenix flight is $50.
There are still no updates on Southwest’s new flight service to Hawaii, but ticket sales are expected to get underway later this year or in early 2019.
