TRAVEL TIPS & TIDBITS

London & Paris News
Strike action is due to take place over four days on London Underground’s Piccadilly line next month, coinciding with Donald Trump’s controversial visit to London on Friday, July 13. The Rail, Maritime and Transport (RMT) union will take industrial action in a row over working conditions and staffing.
The Piccadilly line transports over half a million passengers a day and connects Heathrow airport with central London. But on July 13, over 50,000 protesters are expected to enter the city center.
The planned strike will begin at 9PM on Wednesday, July 11 and continue until 12.01AM on Saturday, July 14.

The California-based bicycle sharing service Lime has launched a fleet of dock-free electric scooters in Paris as part of a wider roll-out in 26 European cities. Lime, which operates bike and scooter schemes in about 60 cities and university campuses in the United States, has already launched operations in the German cities of Berlin and Frankfurt and in Zurich.

Lime users can find and unlock the scooters with a mobile phone app and leave them anywhere after their ride, which will cost one euro ($1.16) per ride plus 0.15 euros per minute. Their speed is limited to 24 kilometers (15 miles) per hour and they have a range of 50 kilometers.
All scooters will be picked up every night around 9PM for recharging and repairs.

The Paris police force has deployed an additional 5,000 policemen each day to protect tourists in seven highly visited areas around the city – the Louvre, the Eiffel Tower, the Champs-Elysées, the Latin Quarter, the Opera House, Montmartre, the Latin Quarter, and the Châtelet transportation hub.
Police will patrol these areas through September 30, specifically to target the main threats to tourists. Bilingual police officers and French students of foreign languages will patrol the streets, offering help to tourists.
Since the tourist protection force was launched, officers have arrested hundreds of people for street scams like fake petitions or three-card tricks, illegally selling souvenirs on the street, bag snatchers and pickpockets.
Pickpockets are especially rampant in the Metro, where they carefully time scams to escape train cars as the doors close. This technique is also used to snatch away rider cellphones.
Travelers planning a summer trip should read the U.S. Embassy’s dedicated guide to avoiding pickpocketing scams in Paris to learn common techniques scammers use.

Visiting Paris this summer? A free Extrema Paris app, launched by City Hall, was launched to guide locals and visitors to places in the city to cool off. France’s public health authority wishes to avoid any repeat of the disastrous heatwave that struck in 2003 when about 15,000 elderly people died across France, including 500 in Paris, from the effects of that heatwave.
Around 800 different places are listed on the app as being suitable for those seeking to take refuge from high temperatures, including the swimming pool in the canal near the Eiffel Tower.
The Extrema app is available in many European cities.

Disney App
Visitors using Disney’s theme park complimentary bus service will now be able to find out exactly when their ride will arrive. Using the My Disney Experience mobile app, guests will be able to track their ride with the new bus time feature and enjoy more time at the company’s theme parks instead of waiting at the bus stop. The bus time feature of Disney’s app show visitors when they are expected to arrive at all four theme parks, two water parks, and the Disney Springs area.
In addition, the My Disney Experience app update is highlighted by an improved design that makes features easier to navigate, including the See Bus Times option, mobile food ordering service, adding tickets, discovering key park offerings and more.
The Disney app already allows guests to view room charges, keep track of dining plan usage, check into a hotel online and even use their phone as a digital key at Disney’s Wilderness and additional Disney Resort hotels in the future.
The My Disney Experience app is available in the Apple Store and Google Play.
The newly integrated Play Disney Parks mobile app uses interactive experiences to give visitors access to a wide range of activities at Disney World and Disneyland, including themed games, Disney trivia, digital achievements, music and more. The group play options allow everyone to join the fun while staying fully engaged in the environments of the parks. App users will also have their time waiting in lines transformed with in-queue games that allow guests to interact with the physical environment around them and activate special show effects.
