Grayton Beach Museum
Founded more than 100 years ago, quirky Grayton Beach in South Walton, Florida, is mostly surrounded by the winding trails of Grayton Beach State Park. Narrow, tree-lined streets in town are perfect for wandering and checking out local shops and restaurants. But now visitors can add a side of culture with a visit to the new museum that will showcase art 60-feet underwaterNorth America’s first permanent underwater sculpture exhibit (the largest subaquatic museum in the world with more than 500 sculptures is located off of Cancun).
An acre of seabed three-quarters of a mile off of Grayton Beach State Park will house the exhibit, which is set to open in July to divers and snorkelers.
The Underwater Museum of Art is .7-miles from the shore of Grayton Beach State Park. Each year, a juried selection of sculptural works, drawn from artists throughout the world, will be installed in the underwater garden. The sculptures quickly attract a wide variety of marine life and, over time, morph into a living reef. It will provide a much-needed habitat for local marine life and fisheries as well as providing marine scientists, wildlife management professionals, ecologists, and students, with an opportunity to study marine life and measure the impact of artificial reef systems on the Gulf ecosystem.
Admission to the Underwater Museum of Art is free – no ticket or reservation is required. However, there is an admission fee for Grayton Beach State Park ($2-$5 per vehicle).
The 2,000-acre Grayton Beach State Park offers parking, showers, restrooms, changing rooms, and a beach walkover.
