TRAVEL TIPS & TIDBITS

Maine Loves You!
The state of Maine has just launched a program named ‘Visit for a Week, Stay for a Lifetime.’  If you visit the state, a network of companies will reimburse your vacation expenses if you end up relocating to the Pine Tree State for a job.

The campaign is part of the ongoing ‘Live and Work in Maine’ program that is aimed at drawing the best and brightest to a state where hiring can’t keep up with growth. Here’s more on the campaign from CNTraveler:
‘There just aren’t enough locals to do certain jobs,’ said Ed McKersie, the executive recruiter who worked with Maine officials to launch both initiatives. ‘We’ve got a shortage of information tech workers. Doctors and nurses are in short supply, as they are nationally. This program is designed to attract people who are hard to recruit.’
The idea was sparked by conversations McKersie had with hotel execs. Guests would sometimes ask concierges about local job openings after falling in love with their surroundings, he said.
Fifteen employers are backing the vacation-reimbursement scheme. All of them have posted job openings, company backgrounders, and contact info on the Visit for a Week, Stay for a Lifetime site. If a connection turns into a position, the new hire will get a signing bonus or straight reimbursement.
Companies on board include local enterprises like engineering firm AAA Energy Services and Acadia Hospital, along with national giants like Boston-based e-retailer Wayfair, whose new call centers in Bangor and Brunswick will employ nearly 1,000 people – no small potatoes in a state of 1.3 million.
We asked McKersie to recommend a Maine itinerary that could convince a first-time visitor to stay awhile.
‘Just go up the coast – Route 1’s the scenic road,’ he said. ‘Kennebunk’s a great little seaside community with great shops and restaurants. Further up, there’s Portland, the great small city right on the water. I’d check out Bar Harbor and Acadia National Park, which is celebrating its 100th anniversary. And in winter, of course, there are all kinds of outdoor activities in northern Maine.’

Shark Week’s Coming…
Southwest Airlines is partnering once again with Discovery Channel’s Shark Week, taking television’s longest-running and most anticipated summer event to new heights. The companies unveiled the first-ever Shark Week-themed 737-700 aircraft proudly displaying the majestic sea life that is widely celebrated by millions during Discovery’s Shark Week, airing June 26 through July 3.
The aircraft will fly as part of the carrier’s fleet through August 31.
Customers who catch a glimpse of the Shark Week-themed plane during their summer travels are encouraged to snap a photo and share it with @SouthwestAir and @SharkWeek, using the hashtag #SharksTakeFlight for a chance to receive Shark Week swag.
Onboard WiFi-equipped flights, travelers can sit back to enjoy Jungle Shark nearly one month before airing during Shark Week. The exclusive episode of Jungle Shark takes travelers on a deep dive into the rainforests of Costa Rica to find out why young bull sharks swim up the river, and how they avoid the 12-14′ American Crocodiles living there.
Southwest and Discovery are sending a family of four on a Mexico vacation, including round-trip airfare for four to Puerto Vallarta, Mexico; $2,000 hotel gift card (equal to a four-night stay) and a $1,000 Visa gift card. Enter for a chance to win at Southwest.com/sharkweek.

Additional charges now apply to budget and sale rates on most airlines for a carry-on bag, checked baggage and advance seat assignments. The least expensive fees are charged when these options are added during the flight booking process. Fees climb higher after flights are reserved and even higher when adding these options at airport check-in. Kayak offers the most up-to-date Fees Chart for all domestic and international airlines.
