TRAVEL TIPS & TIDBITS

Rolling Strikes in Europe
Is France on your calendar in May or June? Be prepared for rolling air and rail strikes during those two months.
Air France workers, including pilots, cabin crews and ground staff, have announced four new strike days for May. On previous strike days around a quarter of flights have been canceled to and from airports all over France – and some short-haul flights to/from the UK. Air France will send an SMS or email if your flight has been canceled the day before you’re due to fly. It’s advisable to download the Air France app so as not miss a notification. In most cases, you will be able to reschedule the flight at no additional cost.

View the scheduled airline and rail strike calendars at The Local.
Here are more tips if your rail or air trip is canceled due to a strike date.
But wait, there’s more…
Rail passengers across England face disruptions in May as rail workers strike. Arriva Rail North, Greater Anglia and South Western Railway will all strike for 24 hours on Wednesday, May 9. In addition, staff on South Western Railway plan a series of one-day strikes on May 11, 14, 16 and 18.

Recycle Projects
So where does that soap go after the hotel guests are gone? Chances are unless you plan to stay for a week or more, it’s safe to say that complimentary bar of soap won’t get used up.
Hotels actually pay an Orlando-based company Clean the World to take their unused soap – $.50 per room, per month. The company recycles the soap in one of Clean the World’s warehouses (India, Las Vegas, Hong Kong, Orlando, and Montreal) and distributed to charities such as the Red Cross and non-government organizations.
The effort is impressive! In 2016, they made more than 7 million soaps and 400,000 hygiene kits. Of these bars of soap, 500,000 went to help those affected by Hurricane Matthew in Haiti and the Bahamas. So far, Clean the World has distributed more than 44 million bars of soap to over 127 countries.
The company also takes slightly used shampoo, body wash, and conditioner bottles. These items are closely inspected (bottles must be 3/4 full), emptier bottles are recycled, and then they are included in the hygiene kits which also include toothbrushes, toothpaste, and hand sanitizer before being distributed to homeless shelters all over the globe.
Clean the World also partners with cosmetic companies like Unilever to receive their rejected soap bars.
