Smokies Summer Show!
In our national parks, you can find over 19 species of fireflies. The Elkmont fireflies are only one of the species in the Smoky Mountains – and the only species in America who can synchronize their light patterns. So it’s quite a sight when the Elkmont fireflies light up the night during the annual find-a-mate week, June 7-14.
Witness the spectacle in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park this summer by entering a lottery system (randomized computer drawing system) to receive a necessary parking pass to the event. There will be 1,800 vehicle passes available for the event.
TODAY, April 27: Lottery opens at 12 p.m. noon EST
April 30: Lottery closes at 8 p.m. EST
May 9: Results of lottery announced
In the application process, you will apply for a regular pass or a large-vehicle pass. You will also choose 2 possible dates that you will be able to attend over the event period. Successful applicants will be notified by e-mail on May 9.
Lottery winners will be charged a $20 reservation fee. The parking pass permits parking at Sugarlands Visitor Center and allows guests to ride the shuttle to the Elkmont viewing area. There is a $2 fee per person (cash only) to ride the shuttle.

Venice News
Tourist numbers are expected to peak between Saturday, April 28 and Tuesday, May 1, which is a public holiday in Italy (and across Europe). The city will control tourist crowds by separating them from locals along visitor-only routes to the most popular landmarks. For years locals have complained that their day-to-day lives are made a misery by the invasion of visitors.
Venice is also debating on setting a limit on the number of visitors who can enter each day throughout the year.
These measures appeared to be a response to this year’s Easter long weekend, when Venice was inundated with even more tourists than usual and visitors had to wait for up to an hour to board the city’s vaporetto water buses.
The city’s population has dipped below 55,000, a historic low and a sharp drop from the 190,000 who lived there at the end of the Second World War.
The Greek island of Santorini and Dubrovnik in Croatia have recently put limits on the number of tourists they are prepared to absorb.
Nearly two million people visited Santorini last year, 850,000 of them on cruise ships. The mayor has capped the daily influx at 8,000, fearing that the Cycladic island is otherwise in danger of losing its charm.
Campaigners from Santorini, Dubrovnik, Venice, Corfu, and Rhodes gathered in Venice earlier this month to discuss how to control mass tourism.
Water buses that transport locals and tourists through Venice’s canals will soon run on environmentally friendly biofuel, made from used cooking oils.
The fuel, which is 15% renewable, will be produced in a Venetian refinery and made using cooking oil from local households.
All of the city’s water buses will use the new fuel for a trial period of seven months, between April and October. Authorities will monitor emissions levels throughout the trial in order to decide if it should be extended.
This kind of fuel, which can reduce fuel consumption and the need for engine maintenance, has already been used in buses in Turin on a trial basis.
In late 2016, Venice added an electric water bus to its fleet as part of a move towards more eco-friendly public transport.
Boats are responsible for a large proportion of air pollution in Venice, though large cruise ships are the worst offenders. The biggest ships will soon be banned from the historic center.
