Airfare Rule Change
American Airlines, Delta Air Lines and United Airlines (the “Big Three”) may have recently coordinated on a complicated and comprehensive scheme to change airfare rules that have the effect of driving up the price of an airline ticket on unsuspecting consumers by as much as a factor of seven.
The policy change bars customary multi-city ticketing using the lowest available fare on each segment. Instead, the new policy combines the highest refundable fares available on each segment and returns a round-trip single price that is substantially higher than if a consumer purchased separate one-way fares.
Leisure travelers, who have been “trained” to always buy the more affordably priced round-trip ticket, will be caught unprepared.
As an example, a two-city domestic U.S. trip researched today returned a coach fare of $1,200 for travel from Jacksonville to Los Angeles (rental car to San Francisco), returning from San Francisco to Jacksonville. If priced as two one-way tickets the fare is $400.
While a travel agent will be cognizant of the policy change, the threshold problem is that most consumers, especially the majority who are infrequent travelers, will not be aware and will pay dearly when booking online at an airline website.
The Business Travel Coalition asked the U.S. Department of Justice to add this industry development to its ongoing investigation into collusive airline agreements.

Postscript: There’s really no need to panic about this new money-grabbing scheme. To avoid paying higher airfare rates, book simple round-trip tickets in and out of the same airport, or book individual one-way tickets.
One of the best ways to check round-trip fares vs. one-way rates is with a visit to
1.) Enter your origin and destination cities.
2.) Click inside the departure date box and calendars (two consecutive months) appear with rates for each date of travel.
3.) Advance the months of the year with a click on the arrow at the right of your screen.
4.) Once you found the airfare of your liking, click on that date to complete either a one-way or round-trip itinerary.
You won’t be able to book a ticket at Google Flights, but you’ll be directed to the appropriate airline’s website to complete the reservation.
Another cool function at Google Flights is to enter your departure city along with your desired dates — but leave the destination airport black. You’ll see a map with cities and airfares. Click and drag the map to see rates worldwide.
There are notable airlines missing from this matrix including Allegiant, Spirit, and Southwest.

Southwest Airlines Increase
Southwest Airlines has increased the fee it charges for early boarding.  The airline’s EarlyBird Check-In option is now $15 per person each way, up from $12.50 – a 20% increase.  Ticketed passengers are a given a boarding position in three groups (A, B or C) at online or airport check-in 24 hours prior to flight departure.  Travelers paying the optional EarlyBird fee are automatically assigned a boarding position beginning 36 hours before the flight.

New Cinque Terre Rail
Cinque Terre is growing at a fast pace and, in order to accommodate visitors, Italian officials are trying to devise a plan that will eliminate congestion at rail stations and on centuries-old footpaths that are feeling the wear and tear of exponentially increasing visitor traffic.
Cruise ships calling in the area are overwhelming the region with visitors that go to see the five charming villages that cling to the cliffs of the Italian coastline.
Some of the major risks officials are dealing with are the 2.5 million visitors endangering the area’s status as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the safety of the narrow paths that connect each city.
In an effort to maintain and preserve its unique heritage, the Cinque Terre Express has launched with the goal of separating tourists from daily commuters in the region and to eliminate some of the congestion on the railway and at railway stations.
There are 44 trains scheduled per day, arriving every half hour connecting Levanto and La Spezia. Stops include each of the five villages: Monterosso, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola and Riomaggiore.
The new service is operated by Trenitalia Regionale and runs throughout the tourist season, or until November 1.
Tickets are about $5

Additional charges now apply to budget and sale rates on most airlines for a carry-on bag, checked baggage and advance seat assignments. The least expensive fees are charged when these options are added during the flight booking process. Fees climb higher after flights are reserved and even higher when adding these options at airport check-in.
