Tall Ships Summer
Tall Ships America will once again bring a fleet of tall ships to the Great Lakes with port appearances throughout the US and Canada. At least 20 tall ships are scheduled to visit each of the Great Lakes this year; a fleet that includes a replica Viking longship and a 170-foot Spanish Galleon making their debut on America’s freshwater seas.
The El Galeon Andalucia, a 495-ton, authentic wooden replica of a galleon that was part of Spain’s West Indies fleet, and the Dragon Harald Fairhar, a replica Viking longship built in Norway, are crossing the Atlantic Ocean this year to join the Tall Ships Challenge.
The entire roster has not been announced, but the fleet will make port at least 8 times this summer:

  • Toronto, July 1-3
  • Fairport Harbor, Ohio, July 8-10
  • Bay City, Michigan, July 15-17
  • Chicago, July 27-31
  • Green Bay, Wisconsin, August 5-7
  • Duluth, Minnesota, August 18-21
  • Erie, Pennsylvania, September 8-11
  • Brockville, Ontario, September 17-18

Public tours are available during port stops, which typically coincide with a festival featuring music and food. Tickets for 60 to 90 minute short sails are the first tickets to sell out.  Visitors should check with each individual port in advance of the event for ticketing information.

Biking Europe
Cyclists in Germany are getting their own form of the Autobahn. The country has recently opened the first three-mile stretch of a bicycle highway that will eventually span over 62 miles. This special 13 feet path differs from a traditional bike lane, which typically shares the road with cars and is separated only by painted lines on the asphalt. The bicycle highway, however, is an entirely separate roadway that’s completely car-free. Using the bike-only highway is similar to driving a car on an interstate. There are passing lanes, overpasses, and underpasses for crossroads. It also has streetlights and will be cleared of snow in the wintertime. It’s projected to take 50,000 cars off the road each day.
The path will connect 10 western cities including Duisburg, Bochum, and Hamm, as well as four universities. It will primarily run along disused railroad tracks in the Ruhr industrial region.
There are currently 14 EuroVelo routes, forming the European cycle route network. Check out the full map of routes by country

NOTE: Airline fees can and often do exceed the cost of your flight! Additional charges now apply to budget and sale rates on most airlines for a carry-on bag, checked baggage and advance seat assignments. The least expensive fees are charged when these options are added during the flight booking process. Fees climb higher after flights are reserved and even higher when adding these options at airport check-in. Kayak offers the most up-to-date Fees Chart for all domestic and international airlines.
