TRAVEL TIPS & TIDBITS

Whale Trail Sites
The California Highway 1 Discovery Route (H1DR) has six new Whale Trail sites from which to see the Pacific Ocean’s orcas, other cetaceans and marine mammals from the shore.
The H1DR is compromised of 10 coastal towns along Highway 1, located half-way between Los Angeles and San Francisco, featuring natural beauty, preeminent wine regions, outdoor adventures, a variety of lodging options, restaurants and more.
There are now more than 90 Whale Trail locations along the west coast, including six new locations along the H1DR:
Avila Beach Pier

Cambria
Cayucos
San Simeon
Oceano Nipomo
Montaña de Oro State Park
The best time to spot whales along the Highway 1 shore is March, April and May. Females and their young calves travel close to shore on their northward migration from Mexico to Alaska. Gray whales migrate south during October and November. Marine animals linger along the Central Coast, feeding on schools of sardines, anchovies and other small fish.
Although ocean productivity may vary from year to year, August, September and October is the most likely time to see humpback whales, dolphins, sea lions and seabirds feeding close to shore.

It is the largest city in Western Colorado, located at the junction of the Gunnison and Colorado Rivers, between Salt Lake City and Denver on Interstate 70.
Among Grand Junction’s spectacular red cliffs and winding canyons are the 11,000-foot Grand Mesa, the world’s largest flat-topped mountain, the 7,500-foot Book Cliffs including the Wild Horse Area, and the 7,000-foot Colorado National Monument.
Nearby Powderhorn Mountain Resort provides downhill skiing in the winter and lift accessible mountain biking.

Fees climb higher after flights are reserved and even higher when adding these options at airport check-in. Kayak offers the most up-to-date Fees Chart for all domestic and international airlines.
