Whale Trail Sites
The California Highway 1 Discovery Route (H1DR) has six new Whale Trail sites from which to see the Pacific Ocean’s orcas, other cetaceans and marine mammals from the shore.
The H1DR is compromised of 10 coastal towns along Highway 1, located half-way between Los Angeles and San Francisco, featuring natural beauty, preeminent wine regions, outdoor adventures, a variety of lodging options, restaurants and more.
There are now more than 90 Whale Trail locations along the west coast, including six new locations along the H1DR:
Avila Beach Pier
San Simeon
Oceano Nipomo
Montaña de Oro State Park
The best time to spot whales along the Highway 1 shore is March, April and May. Females and their young calves travel close to shore on their northward migration from Mexico to Alaska. Gray whales migrate south during October and November. Marine animals linger along the Central Coast, feeding on schools of sardines, anchovies and other small fish.
Although ocean productivity may vary from year to year, August, September and October is the most likely time to see humpback whales, dolphins, sea lions and seabirds feeding close to shore.

Ski Patrol Ski Along
Powderhorn Mountain Resort celebrates its 50th anniversary season with special insider’s experience at the resort through the eyes of ski patrol.
The Ski Patrol Ski Along program serves as a local guide to educate guests of all ages about the roles of ski patrol and their importance to the resort.
For 50 years, Powderhorn Mountain Resort has been serving up skiing on the beautiful Grand Mesa, located just 45-minutes from Grand Junction, Colorado. Today the resort offers some of the best tree skiing in Colorado and a new Flat Top Flyer high-speed detachable quad lift.
For an unparalleled insider’s experience, ski with a professional Ski Patroller and learn some of the tools of the trade such as safety and transporting and caring for guests on the mountain. There are two Ski Patrol Ski Along experiences for guests of all ages: A two-hour package is $75 per person; the four-hour package is $95 per person.
Powderhorn Mountain Resort has partnered with the Grand Junction Visitor Bureau to offer a new ski and stay package, allowing for a customized stay. Choose between 15 hotels and 1-5 days of skiing.
Nestled deep in the heart of the Grand Mesa on the storied Western Slope of Colorado, Powderhorn is a scenic, family-friendly ski, snowboard, and mountain bike destination featuring 1,600 acres of terrain suited to a variety of abilities and preferences.
Grand Junction is Colorado’s Wine Country featuring 24 wineries with year-round tasting rooms, and boasting more than 275 days of sunshine annually which helps produce much of the state’s peach, grape and fruit crops. It is the largest city in Western Colorado, located at the junction of the Gunnison and Colorado Rivers, between Salt Lake City and Denver on Interstate 70.
Among Grand Junction’s spectacular red cliffs and winding canyons are the 11,000-foot Grand Mesa, the world’s largest flat-topped mountain, the 7,500-foot Book Cliffs including the Wild Horse Area, and the 7,000-foot Colorado National Monument.
Nearby Powderhorn Mountain Resort provides downhill skiing in the winter and lift accessible mountain biking.
Other attractions include three national scenic byways, rafting, boating, extensive public art displays, museums, and a vibrant downtown featuring creative culinary options, shopping, Two Rivers Convention Center and the Avalon Theatre.

The least expensive fees are charged when these options are purchased during the ticket booking process. Fees climb higher after flights are reserved and even higher when adding these options at airport check-in. Kayak offers the most up-to-date Fees Chart for all domestic and international airlines.
