The boutique pop-up, Epic Retreats, will appear at three places of natural beauty over the course of the year in Wales and then vanish once the guests depart leaving the dramatic landscapes seemingly untouched.
Epic Retreats will be Wales’s first ‘disappearing’ hotel, which is coming to mystery locations throughout the country this year.
Eight made-to-order cabins draw on aspects of Welsh heritage and tradition. The project is in celebration of Wales’s Year of Legends 2017, with leading architects from around the world invited to design the eight bespoke cabins. Drawing inspiration from Welsh mythology, tradition and beauty, the accommodation displays a variety of national themes, including a dragon’s eye, the country’s slate-mining past and the legends of King Arthur. One cabin will be built in the shape of a traditional Welsh lady’s hat with a king-sized bed on the upper floor and a glass-domed roof for stargazing. Guest will also get a taste of whichever area they happen to stay in: locally-inspired activities, including sea fishing and beer tasting, will be on offer, and meals will be prepared by the country’s best chefs.
Epic Retreats will be an exclusive experience as fewer than 200 bookings will be available for stays across all three destinations. Booking details have yet to be announced. Keep track of news and updates at Epic Retreats.
Wales’ West Country city of Bristol has its first floating hostel. The Kyle Blue is an upmarket floating hostel situated in Bristol Harbour The boat was originally a Dutch barge that housed a restaurant in the harbor, but a $250,000 refurbishment has seen it transformed into chic accommodation for discerning budget travelers. Thirty beds are spread across dormitories with rates of £22 a night ($27) and private bedrooms are priced at £49 a night ($60).
Cabin-style sleeping quarters feature portholes with water views, and beds separated by wooden partitions, with under-bed storage, plus four private shower rooms. Communal spaces include a minimalist lounge area with dining/working tables and floor-to-ceiling windows, giving way to a compact kitchen on the top deck. Guests can prepare their own meals in the self-catering kitchen.
Kyle Blue is a five-minute stroll from the city center and moored on Wapping Wharf between the award winning attractions of the SS Great Britain and the MShed Museum.
Airfare offers – ones with a ticket-by date – and deals with our suggestion to ‘Hurry!’ can expire at any time. Heed Clark’s advice: Buy that great airfare deal – and then figure out a reason to go there! Eventually, you’ll see the world at a fraction of the normal price!
NOTE: Airline fees can and often do exceed the cost of your flight! Additional charges now apply to budget and sale rates on most airlines for a carry-on bag, checked baggage and advance seat assignments. The least expensive fees are charged when these options are purchased during the ticket booking process. Fees climb higher after flights are reserved and even higher when adding these options at airport check-in. Kayak offers the most up-to-date Fees Chart for all domestic and international airlines.
