Hit a Winter Trail
The 21st Annual Winter Trails event will be held during the month of January (previously a one-day event) to introduce individuals to discover snowshoeing and cross country skiing. Events will include special offers on trail passes, rentals and mini cross country lessons and will vary site to site from free to reduced package pricing at over 100 locations around the country. Venues include alpine resorts, Nordic centers, state parks, National Park Service and U.S. Forest Service land. Advanced registration is suggested, but many sites also offer on-site registration.

Belt Up!
The Transportation Safety Board of Canada has taken to Twitter to remind flyers to buckle up throughout the duration of a flight. It posted a seatbelt warning amid an ongoing investigation into severe turbulence on a December 30 Air Canada flight from Shanghai to Toronto and diverted to Calgary. The incident sent 21 people to hospital. Air Canada said three passengers remain in hospital with injuries including serious chest and neck trauma.
‘We thought we were dying,’ one passenger, Connie Gelber, told CTV, a Canadian broadcaster.
‘The ceiling literally fell down,’ another passenger, Elizabeth Brayton, told the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation after arriving in Toronto on a second airplane early Thursday morning. ‘There was a lot of screaming and a lot of kids crying.’
Passenger Suzanne Caudry told CBC News that she saw two passengers who were not wearing seatbelts thrown into the air. ‘Their heads had literally hit the ceiling and actually gone through the plastic,’ she said. ‘The fact that nobody was seriously injured is a miracle.’
The airline said the seat belt sign was on at the time, but many passengers were not buckled up.
An aviation expert said the good safety record of air travel has given flyers a laissez-faire attitude to seatbelt instructions.
What is Turbulence?
It’s an air movement that normally cannot be seen and often occurs unexpectedly. It can be created by many different conditions, including atmospheric pressure, jet streams, air around mountains, cold or warm weather fronts or thunderstorms. Turbulence can even occur when the sky appears to be clear.
In-flight turbulence is the leading cause of injuries to airline passengers and flight attendants.
Each year, approximately 58 people in the United States are injured by turbulence while not wearing their seat belts.
Seat belts should be buckled for the duration of any flight.

NOTE: Airline fees can and often do exceed the cost of your flight! Additional charges now apply to budget and sale rates on most airlines for a carry-on bag, checked baggage and advance seat assignments. The least expensive fees are charged when these options are added during the flight booking process. Fees climb higher after flights are reserved and even higher when adding these options at airport check-in. Kayak offers the most up-to-date Fees Chart for all domestic and international airlines.
