With about 1.5 million subscribers, AT&T’s DirecTV Now is a fast-growing live TV streaming service that provides an affordable alternative to traditional cable and satellite TV.
Now, AT&T is making some changes to keep up with competitors like YouTube TV, PlayStation Vue and Hulu with Live TV.

DirecTV Now upgrades include cloud DVR, third stream
The Dallas Morning News reports that AT&T CEO Randall Stephenson laid out the changes Tuesday at an investor conference in Boston. Here are the headlines:
- 20 hours of cloud DVR included with every package
- Upgrade from two to three concurrent streams for an extra $5/month
- Redesigned interface starting with recent-generation iOS/tvOS devices and web browsers
Subscribers can also now access local channels while on the road. For example, if you normally watch FOX (KTTV) at home in Los Angeles and are traveling to Dallas, you can watch FOX (KDFW) during your visit.
When DirecTV Now launched in late 2016, money expert Clark Howard tested out the service and quickly canceled it because of constant buffering and error messages.
He gave the service a second chance in early 2018 and said it was “flawless.” Read his full review here.
News of the DVR and third stream are no surprise since customers have been vocal about wanting the features added. DirecTV Now’s website currently says the DVR is in beta mode.
DirecTV Now’s base package has been $35 a month since the start. That’s cheaper than YouTube TV, PlayStation Vue and Hulu with Live TV — all $40/month.
