The Roku Channel now has more than 100 free live streaming TV channels to go with its already abundant library of on-demand content.

In a move that is likely to please fans of the popular free streaming service, The Roku Channel recently rolled out 40 new live streaming channels for users on the web, app and Roku streaming devices. These channels vary in topic to include options for news, weather, food, entertainment and sports.

The Roku Channel Is Adding New Channels and a Live TV Guide

Roku now offers more than 100 live channels on the service. And according to a report from TechCrunch, a TV guide-like grid that will be reminiscent of a traditional cable television menu is expected to be available soon. Those who use Pluto TV may already be familiar with this concept, which already is in practice on the ViacomCBS-owned platform.

Other touted benefits will be the easy access of a “Live TV” tile on Roku streaming devices, as well as the ability to press the left arrow button on the remote for quick access.

For now, The Roku Channel users can try out the new live streaming function in a grid format featured both on Roku’s streaming app and website.

The Roku Channel's menu now has live television options.

Perhaps most interesting is the way that Roku is going about entering the live streaming arena. Instead of trying to compete with major services like Pluto TV and Xumo (which was bought by Comcast recently), Roku has decided to welcome the content from these services to its platform.

I was able to quickly spot a “Pluto TV content” section when browsing The Roku Channel’s available live streaming options on the app.

Live Channels Now Available on The Roku Channel

In a move that sets the tone for Roku’s commitment to news coverage as a part of this content diversification, it was recently announced that news organization Reuters will have a 24-hour news channel on the platform.

In addition to Reuters, you can also find news streams from industry regulars such as ABC News and USA Today on the platform.
