Want to save money on your wireless service? Best Buy and Virgin Mobile are reportedly teaming up for an offer you may want to consider.

Get 5 months of free wireless service

FierceWireless reports Virgin Mobile has an experimental promotion going on right now that offers five months of free service if you buy an LG X Power smartphone in select Best Buy stores.

Wave7 Research, a subscription-based research service covering the wireless industry, first reported that the big-box electronics store and the discount wireless service were partnering for this temporary promotion.

The basic service being offered for free normally costs $35 a month through Virgin. Users receive unlimited talk and text and 5 GB of high-speed data. After 5GB, you are then throttled to 2G speeds.

The trial reportedly began Dec.9 and is running through April 4.

An email to Best Buy requesting a list of participating stores was not returned at press time. We’ll update this story as more info becomes available.

Virgin Mobile isn’t the first carrier to toy around with the idea of a free service period for customers.

In December, Republic Wireless offered six months of free service, including unlimited talk and text messages, plus 1GB of cellular data. That offer was available to both new and existing customers when they purchased one of two handsets.
