By the end of 2018, the prepared meals will be available in 2,000 locations. The meals, which have a shelf life of three days, are sold at price points ranging from $8 to $10.
In a parallel food development, Walmart is also introducing four $15 meal-kit options in stores, including Steak Dijon, Basil Garlic Chicken, Sweet Chili Chicken Stir Fry and Pork Florentine. Previously, Walmart only offered a selection of meal kits online through outside vendors.
Walmart’s latest moves can be seen as a shot across the bow of Amazon, which recently entered the supermarket business through its buyout of Whole Foods.
Other grocers have offered prepared meals for a while now, but Walmart wanted to get it right before rolling out this initiative. The company developed the meals over two months at its culinary innovation center and executives now feel comfortable with the results.
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, Americans spent $3,008 on restaurants and takeout in 2015 — the most recent year for which data is available. If the average American household could reduce that by even one-third, it would represent $1,000 back in their pocket.
