Evolution is the name of the game in the grocery business. With Amazon putting pressure on traditional supermarkets, there’s added incentive for them to come up with what’s hot and new — or fall behind.
Here’s what’s in store for Kroger shoppers in the new year.
6 new things you’ll see at Kroger next year
The nation’s second-largest grocer has a lot in store as we gear up for 2019!
Get ready for ‘Scan, Bag, Go’
Scan, Bag, Go (SBG) is a new handheld wireless technology that will be in 400 Kroger stores across the country by the start of 2019.
The technology allows you to ring yourself up as you shop. You can even bag your groceries along the way if you bring reusable bags with you.
When you get to the checkout line, simply scan the SBG device at the register and pay as you normally would.
Then waltz out the door and be glad you didn’t have to unload your groceries on the conveyor belt…just to reload them back up at the end of it!

Look for new regional flavors in the aisles
Kroger will beef up its store brand offerings in the new year with the addition of a slew of local and regional tastes.
Be on the lookout for new products like these and others:
- Private Selection BBQ sauces inspired by the Carolinas, Texas, Memphis and Kansas City
- Kroger Nashville Hot Chicken Chips
- Private Selection Pimento Cheese & Harissa Kettle Chips
Kroger is pro probiotics!
“Good” bacteria in the gut is important to overall health and wellness.
Seizing on this market opportunity, Kroger plans to roll out the following products in 2019 to satisfy evolving customer tastes:
- Simple Truth Organic Kombucha (Blueberry Ginger; Raspberry Hibiscus; Blueberry Grape; and Strawberry Lemonade)
- Simple Truth Organic Apple Cider Vinegar
- Kroger Greek Yogurt
- Kroger Probiotic
More meatless offerings are on the way
Consumers want healthy options no matter where they shop!
Leading the charge for Kroger in 2019 will be new store brand products like Simple Truth Coconutmilk, Simple Truth Powdered Coconutmilk Creamer, Simple Truth Meatless Patties and more.
Meanwhile, you can get a preview of other top food trends that you’ll see reflected in Kroger’s 2019 lineup of store brand products here.
Ugly produce is coming in the new year
Kroger will begin selling misshapen or unusual-looking produce in 2019 that would otherwise be thrown out. Look for it under the “Pickuliar Picks” label.
It’s all part of management’s goal of achieving zero food waste by 2025.
Kroger and Walgreens are teaming up on a new store format
Details are scarce on this one, but what we know so far is that 13 Walgreens stores in Northern Kentucky — near Kroger’s Cincinnati headquarters — will be the first to be Kroger-ized!
Among other things, it’s believed the new format will be a launch pad for the introduction of Kroger’s Simple Truth organic brand into Walgreens stores.
However, some investment bankers think this arrangement may actually be a prelude to Kroger selling off its pharmacy business to Walgreens.
We’ll just have to wait and see!
